Handicap bets as a betting system

In this article you can find all the information you need about handicap bets. We will explain what it’s about with simple examples and also talk about one special form that it has, the Asian-Handicap.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A HANDICAP BET?

Well, it’s a bet where the bookmaker allows the presumed weaker team a lead, which is added to the actual outcome. So the team considered a favourite will start with a draw of 0:0, but in fact will be behind already with 0:1, even before the start of the game.

Therefore, if the favourite team wins with 1:0, when we subtract the handicap, the result will change to 1:1. Now you can see that the most important thing to win your bet is not the actual score of the game, but the score with the added goals from the handicap. This bet is normally used to increase the chance of a draw and to higher the odds for the favourite to win.

You should note that there is no restriction to only one goal in the lead that is given in a handicap bet. So the favourite team could start the game with a handicap of 2 or more goals.

HANDICAP SPORTING BETS EXAMPLES

We will explain the handicap bet with a practical example: Liverpool meets Everton in the England Premier League. A regular win with a 3-way-bet of Liverpool will give odds of 1.5 for a victory, 4.0 for a draw and 6.0 for a loss. Now, if we are completely certain that Liverpool is going to win what we should do is not place a usual 3-way-bet, but instead a handicap bet with a one-goal lead for Everton. Like this, the odds will change to 2.5 for a win, 4.0 for a draw and 4.0 for a loss, as well. In this example the result is 3:0 for the England record champion and when we subtract the handicap we will be left with 2:0 for Liverpool. In this example we have won the bet.

Here you can see how exactly the end result changes with a handicap bet:

Official result Result with handicap – 1
0:0 0:1
1:0 1:1
2:0 2:1
2:1 2:2
3:1 3:2
0:1 0:2
0:2 0:3
1:1 1:2
2:2 2:3

There is also another type of handicap bet, called Asian-handicap, but it’s more suitable for more advanced bettors. It is very popular in the Asian countries and that’s where the name comes from. It is actually an extension of the regular handicap bet and offers the possibility for a lower risk. As opposed to the normal handicap bet, here you can get your full stake back or, if not entirely, at least one part of it.

THE ASIAN-HANDICAP EXPLAINED

In a simple Asian-handicap (-0) the insert is only refundable in case of a draw, including the handicap, so the risk is lowered correspondingly for the player. But this type of bet has other forms and shapes as well. One example is the -0.25 handicap. The main rule here, again including the handicap, is that only half the stake is in draw, so the bet can be only half lost. But things change at -0.75 handicap, which starts with a handicap of two goals. If the game ends with a victory with a one-goal lead it means that the bettor gets back his bet and gets paid half the profit, too. The -0.5 handicap, on the other hand, is a regular handicap bet.

ARE HANDICAP BETS PROFITABLE?

Handicap bets are potentially very profitable because they are great for increasing it’s odds. It’s one of the few betting systems that offers such a worthwhile output with considerably low risk. Remember that the odds for a favourite to win increase with the handicap. Many bettors play the handicap bet as a part of an accumulation bet.

IN WHICH SPORTS CAN YOU USE THE HANDICAP BET?

Handicap bets are especially popular in team sports, like football or hockey. They are extremely interesting in football particularly, because it often offers incredible duels. The handicap bets give a great foundation for increasing the odds of the favoured team. For example in football, the result at halftime is normally seen through handicaps in order to offer attractive rates for the second half of the game. If it happens that a team A that leads 2:0 at halftime, there will be many bookmakers that will offer odds for a 0:2 handicap for the second side.
